What a week!
Mid-April brought 400 of our closest friends to The Big Apple for the annual Mirren New Business Conference with Adweek. We all took in more than 30 sessions that included Crispin, Droga5, R/GA, IDEO, TBWA\Chiat\Day, Zimmerman, Mirren, the Search Consultants, and of course... The Live Pitch Competition.
Here, you’ll find extended coverage and content from the event. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be adding more brief recap postings, speaker hand-outs, photos and video clips.
Did you take any photographs or session notes? Please share them with the community. We’ll post them and give you full credit for sharing. Just send them along to Natashia Elstad.
Note that this content is available only to members of Mirren. If you joined us at the conference, you have been provided with a reduced membership fee during our beta period.

Here is the second batch of photos from the conference. Enjoy!..

“I am worried about the future of our business. And it has nothing to do with our ability to grasp digital or social media. More important than reactively chasing every shiny new “object,” agencies must proactively step back and examine how they can better meet the needs of their market.”..

If you’re not going in with the attitude of converting the business, you’re not taking the right approach. It’s not “all about ideas” or “consumer insights” in 2010. In fact, you should forget the brief. And definitely forget the agenda. Based on the latest strategies from Mirren’s on-site training, this double-length session will laser in on exactly what has changed in 2010...

You invest a tremendous amount of time and effort in these key documents. And yet, clients still complain that agencies all look and sound the same. Given this, how should they be structured and written to better differentiate and persuade?..

Sometimes, an industry expert can get your company on the road to redemption. And, sometimes, it takes a stranger. With almost two decades in business, Alex Betancur has shaken up clothiers, retailers and Internet companies—but never an advertising agency. And that’s a big reason he was invited to address Mirren’s 2010 New Business Conference—to help agencies, executives and staff pondering a 180...

You have only one chance for a first impression. Given this, and the short attention span of clients, there are several critical points that you must make within the first few seconds or lines of your outreach. Here, you will move step-by-step through a process that will help you to craft the messaging that will best hook your prospects. Negotiating a piece of business can feel just as good as winning it in the first place. Believe it.
Too often, however, it’s gut-wrenching, where one group gives up too much and then beats itself up for being weak. And the other side of the table, well, they wonder if they could’ve gotten more concessions had they just pushed a little harder.

Procurement: it’s not just a hobby anymore.
Under ever growing pressure to cut operating expenses, companies will continue to look to their purchasing departments for help. And despite the fact that they often play the heavy, procurement execs realize agencies must earn enough to make a job worth their while.

The economy looks at long last to be on the mend—and that’s not necessarily good for marketing agencies. Many competitors fold or go into bunker mode when times get tough. This means, recessions provide astounding opportunities for strategic businesses to expand, boost brands and solve client problems. “Recovery is for losers,” she said. One of the best ways to grow is by pursuing new assignments with existing clients—and that’s easier said than done. To land those insights, agencies must find consultants, employees or others who can help you think differently...
